I am supported by one of the support workers to access the community and my lady gives me confidence and security. I have many health needs as well as mental health difficulties so to go into the community is very difficult at times for me. My support worker reassures me. She is always on time and we decides what I want to do each visit. I love going swimming so we often do this and then have some lunch afterwards. Swimming helps me keep active and also helps my mental health. I couldn't be without my support worker and we have built up a lovely trusting relationship. I feel so lucky to have this care and support. EM
I have just started college and with the help of my support worker, I can now begin to learn about different subjects. The support I have had is amazing. During our visits, I get to decide what I would like to do. We sometimes go to the city and have a meal together or we do my weekly shopping. I am learning how to be independent and understand more about my own finances. We even made lasagna together.
Bless you, you're a star 🌟 The help and support you have provided for my grandson has been so needed.
Thanks so much, you've been amazing!
I have not lived independently for 4 years and I am now starting to learn cooking skills. I am eating actual cooked meals and not sweets and snacks. I feel better in myself.
"Thank you for the support today I do appreciate it
I am glad for the help you give me".
Hello, my name is Sally and I have recently set up a small company called S&L Safe Cut Kits, putting together kits specifically designed to support those affected by self-harm.
My journey began when my youngest daughter started self harming, at age 11. One of the hardest things I have had to deal with as a parent. Social Care recommended I put together a safe cut kit for her, but with all the trauma and anxiety, I just didn’t know where to start. I just couldn’t face going to a local pharmacy trying to work out what she needed. I was too emotional. I searched the internet and soon discovered there wasn't anything suitable for my daughters needs. I just wanted a kit relevant for those who use self harm as a coping strategy.
So…..a few years on, I decided to put together kits, primarily promoting the safe, alternative methods of self harming, by enclosing items to encourage this, but also sterile first aid supplies, specifically designed for cutting style wounds. I also enclosed an illustrated, easy to follow guide on how to use the safe methods, how to tend to wounds and emergency telephone numbers.
Research suggests having a kit lowers the need for self injury and lowers the harm rate drastically. Statistics report that 17% of people will self harm, at some point, during their lifetime. Putting that in context, in a class of 30 children, 5 of them will self harm. That is an awful reality, and so many will hide what they are doing and it can go unnoticed.
My aim is to get my kits out to individuals who need them, reducing the risk of injury, infection and scarring.
Thank you for taking the time to read my story and I hope it can be useful for anyone struggling with the effects of self harm.
Please take a look at my website for details on my kits and additional items that you may find helpful.
